Averiquei began in 2015 after a long conversation with a family knitting mill in Barcelos, in the north of Portugal. They had spent three decades making other companies' jumpers and had firm opinions about which of them were any good.
So the range started as their answer: lambswool at 12 gauge, a fisherman rib at 7, and Shetland at 9. We added the yarn counts and the finished weights to the product pages because those are the figures the mill uses to talk about a knit, and they are more useful than any adjective we could write.
Everything is still knitted there. The cotton — the overshirts, the chore jacket and the tee — is cut and sewn in Porto, about an hour south.
Donegal-spun
The first shearing of a lamb, which is finer and softer than the same sheep's wool later on. It takes dye evenly and it holds a rib. Most of the range is lambswool because it is the best compromise between warmth, weight and price.
Coarser, crisper, and stiff for the first fortnight. Then it blooms: the fibres open up and it softens without going shapeless. It is the most durable wool we use and the one that looks best after five winters.
Yarn with coloured neps spun into it, so the surface reads as a dozen shades. It hides wear and it hides marks, which makes it the most forgiving knit here.
19.5 micron, which is below the point where most people register wool as itchy. Knitted at 16 gauge for layering under a jacket.
Acrylic and wool-acrylic blends, viscose, and anything described only as “wool blend” without a percentage. If a composition is not on the product page it is because we have not made the thing yet.
It comes up often enough that it is worth being specific about.
Nothing at the chest, the cuff or the hem. Not our name and not anyone else's.
No woven tab on a pocket or a side seam. The only label is the composition tag inside the collar.
No graphics, no slogans, no numbers. The tee is sold plain and stays plain.
Every pattern is our own. We do not make versions of other companies' designs.
